Calgary
About the Area
Set in the rolling foothills against the majestic Canadian Rockies to the west and the great plains
to the east, Calgary offers visitors the experience of two exciting worlds - stimulating, big city
life and wilderness adventure.
Get away for a day or two of adventure in the Canadian Rockies. Spring ski in the high country or
golf in a green valley on the same day. Camp by a lake or relax at a mountain resort in Kananaskis
Country. Enjoy a perfect ski and spa winter vacation at a castle-like hotel. Trail ride, heli-hike,
fish, mountain bike, whitewater raft or simply enjoy the freshness of the mountain air.
Calgary is also home to the world famous Calgary Stampede.
Whatever you plan to do, Calgary's climate creates an enjoyable atmosphere for any visit. Seasonal
norms vary from warm, sun-filled summer days averaging 20° C with pleasantly cool nights, to winter
averages of -11° C. Alberta receives more sunshine than any other province in Canada, averaging
2,000 hours every year. In winter, warm winds called Chinooks can raise temperature by as much
as 20 degrees in a matter of hours.
